Description

I love teaching people about how to navigate themselves safely through the mountains. I offer a beginners and intermediate mountaineering course, which can vary depending on time and experience. This is the premier beginner mountaineering instruction course. This mountaineering course is designed for outdoor enthusiasts who want to learn to mountain climb. The glacier and surrounding peaks will be our classroom for the duration of this course. Unlike other mountaineering classes, we provide food, camping accommodations, and transport to the trail head. Our mountain guides are passionate mountaineers, who are certified by the international federation of mountain guide associations IFGMA/UIAGM.During the day, build your skills and climb high mountain peaks. In the evening, share stories and lessons with your fellow mountaineers.

INSTRUCTORS AND GROUP SIZE.

Great people to spend a week in the mountains with, your instructors are certified by international federation of mountain guide associations IFGMA and Peruvian mountain Guide school. (Casa de guias – Parque Ginebra 28 G – Huaraz) There will be a maximum 3 of participants per instructor.

LOCATION.

The course is based in Mt. Yanapaccha 5460m (Cordillera Blanca). Is located very close to popular Pisco but is much less known and less frequented by climbers than Pisco. It is a moderately difficult climb with some steep sections and a final slope of up to 65 deg. to the summit. Yanapaccha is an ideal peak for learning how to navigate through the mountains. BEGINNER MOUNTAINEERING COURSE PRE-REQUISITES.

You will need to have the physical fitness, any training you can do in advance will enhance your overall experience.
Be a hiker or mountain traveller. There are no technical pre-requisites for this course and no prior mountaineering experience is needed. Leave that to us to teach you!
You must do acclimatization hike before starting the course (at least 1 or 2 days)

Itinerary

Day 01

HUARAZ 3.100M / PRIVATE CAR TO KILOMETRO 42 4.600M / TREK TO MORAINE CAMP 4.900M

We will depart Huaraz early in the morning and drive to the Yanapaccha trailhead. The donkies carry the stuff to moraine camp. And we hike into moraine camp (approx. 2 hours). It’s a perfect area for instruction and to begin the course, learn about introduction to mountaineering and hazard management, equipment use and care, climbing knots.

Day 02

MORAINE CAMP 4.900M / TREK AND PRACTICE ON THE GLACIAR.

After breakfast, Hike about 20 minutes up to the ice and begin with snow School: Ice climbing, movement on snow, Use of Ice Axe, self-Arrests, walking with crampons, kicking steps/following tracks, rope team travel techniques, and snow/ice anchors. Around 4.00 pm, wrap up for the day and descend back to camp for a dinner to camp.

Day 03

MORAINE CAMP 4900M / PRACTICE CREVASSE RESCUE.

After the Breakfast. Spend the day in the campsite learning rope up on glacier, equalized anchors, and How to set up a crevasse rescue (3 to 1 and 5 to 1) and all components of the crevasse rescue system. After thoroughly understanding the system, learn how to rappel on the mountains. Return to camp at about 4.00 p.m., have dinner and get to sleep

Day 04

MORAINE CAMP / PRACTICE ON GLACIER.

Leave the campsite and head up to the glacier to practice a real crevasse rescue skill and various techniques and scenarios of glacier travel. Participants take charge of their rope teams using the skills learned in the previous 3 days and are presented with problems to solve pertaining to terrain, hazards, group management, etc... You will wander through crevasse fields and up/down steep slopes where both running and fixed belays will be used as well as a crevasse rescue will be performed. Afterwards. Basic climbing technique will be discussed as well as lead climbing as there is interest. That afternoon a pre-summit discussion will take place and plans will begin for the following days climbing objective. Participants will determine what needs to be done in preparation for the climb (route recon, equipment prep, rope team divisions, food & water prep) and divide up the responsibilities amongst themselves. Dinner will be served around 4:30 pm and everyone will get to sleep early in anticipation of the next day climb.

Day 05

MORAINE CAMP 4.900M / SUMMIT 5460M/ MORAINE CAMP

At 3:00 am after breakfast and gearing up for the climb. Head up to the glacier and begin the summit attempt in your rope team(s). during the ascent you´ll practice everything what you learn in the Course, the summit can be reached in 4 To 5 hours. The descent will take 3-4 hours (included two rappel), you should be back in camp by midafternoon for a warm lunch and some rest.

Day 06

MORAINE CAMP / KILOMETRO 42 /HUARAZ

Final day. An opportunity to review techniques before packing up camp, and hike out to the road where a transport will be waiting for the return to Huaraz.
